ABOUT THE ROLE
The Engagement Manager is AGMI’s operational lead for client engagements in the life science sector. You will lead a team of 3-5 consultants, scoping and managing project workstreams spanning commercial strategy, BD and licensing, investment due diligence, and market entry across biotech, pharmaceutical, and medtech clients. You will translate Partner-defined objectives into structured execution, hold the team to the standard the work requires, and serve as the primary point of contact for clients throughout an engagement.
Developing the people on your team is as central to this role as the client work itself. You will be expected to bring both scientific or commercial domain literacy and the consulting craft to turn it into structured, client-ready insight.
Candidates with a background at a management consultancy or in life science corporates, investment firms, or healthcare-focused strategy functions are equally valued.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Engagement Leadership
- Own end-to-end delivery of life science engagements from kick-off through final presentation, ensuring quality, accuracy, and timeline adherence
- Translate Partner-defined objectives into structured project plans with clear workstreams, milestones, and ownership across the team
- Decompose complex mandates such as pipeline valuation, licensing strategy, and market access assessment into discrete tasks and allocate work to Associates
- Maintain an integrated view of all workstreams, proactively identifying risks, interdependencies, and analytical gaps before they become problems
Team Management & Mentorship
- Lead, coach, and develop Associates on both technical skills and consulting craft, including modelling, research, slide logic, storylining, and client communication
- Conduct regular check-ins to monitor progress, resolve blockers, and ensure output quality before client submission
- Foster a team culture of intellectual rigour, scientific curiosity, and continuous professional growth
Client Communication & Stakeholder Management
- Serve as the primary day-to-day client contact, managing expectations and maintaining strong professional relationships throughout the engagement
- Lead working sessions, interim reviews, and executive-level presentations; synthesise client feedback and cascade adjustments to the team
- Manage upward to Partners with timely status updates, decision escalations, and strategic alignment
- Navigate multi-stakeholder environments including biopharma corporates, venture investors, regulatory bodies, and academic institutions
Strategic Advisory
- Contribute substantive life science domain expertise to engagement strategy alongside Partners
- Advise clients on commercial strategy, partnership and licensing structures, M&A targets, and market positioning
- Identify opportunities to expand engagement scope or develop new client relationships in collaboration with the business development team
- Stay current on clinical pipelines, regulatory approvals, deal flow, and innovation trends across the life science landscape
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED
- 3–7 years of progressive experience in management consulting, investment banking, or corporate strategy, with a minimum of 2 years leading teams or projects in a life science context
- Demonstrated track record of managing end-to-end consulting or advisory engagements in biotech, pharma, or medtech
- Strong command of project management disciplines including task decomposition, milestone tracking, resource allocation, and cross-functional coordination
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; comfortable presenting to C-suite, board, or investment committee audiences
- Business-level fluency in both Mandarin Chinese and English, written and spoken
PREFERRED
- Consulting experience at MBB, Big Four advisory, or a specialist life science strategy firm
- Alternatively, a strategy or BD leadership role at a biopharma, medtech, or life science investment firm
- Advanced degree strongly preferred: MBA, PhD in life sciences, MD/MBA, or equivalent
- Experience in licensing, M&A, market access, or go-to-market strategy for innovative therapeutics or devices
- Proficiency in Japanese or other languages
- Familiarity with North America, Asia-Pacific life science regulatory and investment environments
WORK ARRANGEMENT
This is a remote-first role. You will be expected to travel to client sites, domestically and internationally, based on engagement needs.
